RESUMO

Background Hospital pharmacy departments have a critical role in the healthcare system, as they aim to provide excellent patient services while also ensuring cost-effectiveness. Lean methodologies are well-known for improving efficiency and quality in various industries, but their impact on healthcare, particularly in hospital pharmacy settings, has not been thoroughly investigated. Aim This quality improvement (QI) study aimed to assess the impact of implementing the sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain (5S) methodology using the innovative orientation, coordination, training, awareness, governance, observation, normalization, and promotion (OCTAGON-P) framework on the operations of Mediclinic Parkview Hospital (MPAR) Pharmacy in Dubai, UAE. Methods The QI project spanned a period of six weeks, from December 18th, 2023, to January 28th, 2024. Throughout this period, a new novel OCTAGON-P framework's eight crucial elements were methodically integrated. Simultaneously, an extensive preparation process encompassing the five stages of the 5S method was carried out. Results The findings indicated a notable enhancement in organization, orderliness, cleanliness, medication storage, and workspace standardization. The significant improvement of 217% in terms of organization highlighted the effectiveness of resource arrangement. The orderliness of the workspace saw an increase of 800%, indicating a transformation in the systematic organization. Additionally, cleanliness improved by 138%, demonstrating a significant advancement in maintaining a spotless environment. The standardization of processes experienced a boost of 300%, reflecting a solidified approach to consistent operational methods. These refinements resulted in an overall improvement of 90% from the initial baseline of 20% on the 5S checklist scores. Efficiency gains were observed, with outpatient medication retrieval times reduced by 50%, inpatient times by 40%, emergency prescription serving by 16.7%, and pediatric prescription serving by 11%. The inpatient medication return process saw a 67% improvement. Patient counseling time increased by 23.3%, indicating a more patient-centered approach. Prescription verification and medication expiry checks increased by 50% and 200%, respectively, enhancing the quality of care. Inventory management efficiency improved by 36%, and medication label printing time decreased by 70% with the additional label printers. Installing extra medication label printers was done through the OCTAGON-P framework, specifically in the "orientation" and "coordination" phases. These two initial phases focused on leadership's 5S orientation, management support, and securing additional resources. Therefore, the OCTAGON-P framework provided a structured approach that promoted continuous improvement and sustained lean practices. Conclusion This research study presented the remarkable effectiveness of the OCTAGON-P framework in structurally implementing the 5S methodology into hospital pharmacy operations. The findings underscored the potential of lean 5S to enhance and optimize operational efficiency and overall quality within the critical environment of hospital pharmacy settings. Consequently, these improvements can conclusively result in the provision of superior and enhanced patient care, which is truly fundamental and central to the mission and objectives of any healthcare institution.

RESUMO

A well-developed road network plays a crucial role in fostering social and economic progress within a region. However, road crashes resulting in massive injuries and deaths profoundly affect socioeconomic development. There is a need therefore to identify working approaches used in road safety strategic management which provide evidence and a foundation to achieve safer road transport. This may be achieved through a systematic literature review considering both state-of-the-art technologies and best practice. Such a review is presented in this paper. The review involved searching twenty-six bibliographic databases and twenty-four websites of road-related organizations. Following the EPPI-Reviewer methodology, the researchers identified 30 studies that demonstrated various methods employed in the strategy development process. The review highlighted the prevalence of information technology in crash data analysis, particularly concerning big data applications. Moreover, existing resource allocation methods primarily focus on local countermeasures prioritization and ranking based on benefit cost analysis. However, the review identified a gap in comprehensive crash database understanding, and only a few single-objective optimization methods have been developed for strategy development, while there is a need for data mining methods and multi-objective optimisation methods supported by expert knowledge.

RESUMO

While uncertainty has always been a feature of the healthcare environment, its pace and scope are rapidly increasing, fueled by myriad factors such as technological advancements, the threat and frequency of disruptive events, global economic developments, and increasing complexity. Contemporary healthcare organizations thus persistently face what is known as "deep uncertainty," which obscures their ability to predict outcomes of strategic action and decision-making, presenting them with novel challenges and threatening their survival. Persistent, deep uncertainty challenges us to revisit and reconsider how we think about uncertainty and the strategic actions needed by organizations to thrive under these circumstances. Simply put, how can healthcare organizations thrive in the face of deeply uncertain environments? We argue that healthcare organizations need to employ both adaptive and creative strategic approaches in order to effectively meet patients' needs and capture value in the long-term future. The chapter concludes by offering two ways organizations can build the dynamic capabilities needed to employ such approaches.

RESUMO

As the recent COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated, appropriate state support policies are crucial for supporting industrial supply chains during crises to prevent viable businesses from defaulting. In this context, this study proposes a hybrid credit risk model to appropriately size public interventions for viable (worthy) businesses through systematic risk assessment during a period of turmoil. This study discusses the effects of the credit crunch-based economic downturn and proposes a methodology to assist policymakers in managing limited public resources to effectively support industrial supply chains. The proposed approach initially focuses on the dynamics of credit risk during economic recession periods, identifying the conditions that may justify a public intervention strategy based on public guarantees. Subsequently, a hybrid credit risk model is developed to appropriately size public interventions by quantifying systematic risk. Finally, a numerical application is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

RESUMO

Background: Articles on managerial leadership (ML) have been published from year to year, since 1950s. The use of ML theory in previous research is common, but some inconsistencies are found regarding the terms commonly used. In other words, there is a mismatch between the use of the term ML in article paper and structures. This will certainly have an impact on bias and ambiguity for future research literatures. Novelty: Theoretical review on this topic is rarely carried out, specifically in ML theory. The novelty of this research lies in the classification results of articles that used the term ML in accordance with the theory. Objective: This theoretical review was conducted to examine the classification of accuracy of articles which were using the term ML in title with four consistency and accuracy indicators on the article structures starting from the problem, aim, literature, results and discussion, as well as conclusion sections. Method: This review as a qualitative literature research used a language and historical approach, as well as a ML theory. This study Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The technique and instrument used was bibliographic instruments, comprehensive list of keywords and mixed search terms to search the articles online with the help of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers. A total of 68 articles published from 1959 to 2022 as a final reviewed. They were obtained from several well-known digital journal content such as Jstor, Proquest, Oxford University Press, Google Scholar, and National Library, as well as various journals under major publishers such as Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Emerald, Brill, and Wiley. The data collected were analyzed using content analysis with 4 indicators of consistent (accurate & additional) and inconsistent (difference & additional), and 4 accuracy category of accuracy, appropriate, bias, and error for determaining the articles classification, and validated them by using triangulation and grounded theory. Results: The results showed that in 1959 the first article appeared using the word ML, in 2012 the first and only article appeared that only used ML, and the last is in 2022. Then, the consistency of the title with other article sections is 17 articles (25% of 68) according to the accurate term indicator. Last, the accuracy of articles was divided into four categories: 10 articles (15% of 68) in the accuracy category. Contribution: This systematic review contributes the article classification that can become a more established scientific roadmap of references and reasoning of studying ML.

RESUMO

AIMS: Strategies focus on securing the competitiveness of medical device corporations by strengthening their organizational capabilities, which, in turn, ensure their continuous development. This study aims to investigate both management strategies and organizational culture, which may affect the performance of these companies, and analyzes the influence of education and training investment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the 3rd to 6th Human Capital Corporate Panel surveys by the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training as well as data from the Korea Information Service and 6,112 workers and 260 companies were analyzed. For the analysis, management strategy and organizational culture were set as independent variables, and corporation performance was set as the dependent variable. Additionally, investment in education and training was set as a control variable between the independent and dependent variables. Corporate performance was analyzed by dividing into organizational satisfaction and organizational commitment. RESULTS: Differentiation strategy and innovative culture had a positive (+) effect on organizational satisfaction, while cost leadership strategy and hierarchical culture had a negative (-) effect. On the other hand, in the case of interaction with education and training investment, cost leadership strategy and hierarchical culture had a positive (+) effect, while differentiation strategy and innovation culture had a negative (-) effect. In organizational commitment, innovation culture had a positive (+) effect, and hierarchical culture had a negative (-) effect. In the case of interaction with investment in education and training, only the hierarchical culture had a positive (+) effect. CONCLUSIONS: The innovation culture positively influenced the performance of medical device companies. Furthermore, cost leadership strategy, hierarchical culture, education and training investment improved the corporate performance of these companies. To enhance corporate performance, these companies should create an innovation culture and invest in education and training in accordance with the organizational culture.

COVID-19 has proven the excellence of Korea's medical devices, and the medical device industry is expected to continue to grow due to the increase in chronic disease and non-face-to-face treatment. However, the current medical device industry is monopolized by global companies with capital and technological prowess. To overcome this, Korean medical device companies are developing innovative medical devices centered on start-ups, but now is the time to strategically respond to them in order to compete with global companies. In general, companies establish management strategies for survival and growth by analyzing threats and opportunities based on the market environment to maintain the optimal organization according to market competition, government policies, and changes in consumer needs. Strategies are often established based on the culture of the organizations that make up the company. When it comes to strategy establishment, the medical device industry has special characteristics compared to other industries. The medical device industry is based on advanced technology and puts patient safety first, requiring continuous product upgrades. Therefore, it is an essential industry for employees to invest in education and training. The analysis shows the effectiveness of investment in education and training according to the management strategy and organizational culture of medical device companies. It was confirmed that when medical device companies create an Innovation culture, their performance improves. It also shows that when medical device companies adopt a cost leadership strategy, they need to increase their investment in education and training to improve corporate performance.

RESUMO

Pandemic crises like the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have severely influenced companies working in the Agri-food industry in different countries. Some companies could overcome this crisis by their elite managers, while many experienced massive financial losses due to a lack of the appropriate strategic planning. On the other hand, governments sought to provide food security to the people during the pandemic crisis, putting extreme pressure on companies operating in this field. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a model of the canned food supply chain under uncertain conditions in order to analyze it strategically during the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem uncertainty is addressed using robust optimization, and also the necessity of using a robust optimization approach compared to the nominal approach to the problem is indicated. Finally, to face the COVID-19 pandemic, after determining the strategies for the canned food supply chain, by solving a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem, the best strategy is specified considering the criteria of the company under study and its equivalent values are presented as optimal values of a mathematical model of canned food supply chain network. The results demonstrated that "expanding the export of canned food to neighboring countries with economic justification" was the best strategy for the company under study during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the quantitative results, implementing this strategy reduced by 8.03% supply chain costs and increased by 3.65% the human resources employed. Finally, the utilization of available vehicle capacity was 96%, and the utilization of available production throughput was 75.8% when using this strategy.

RESUMO

This paper aims to understand the different resilience pathways local governments may take during moments of crisis, specifically focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic. Through survey responses from local administrations in Wallonia, Belgium, we consider how varied contexts led to different strategic resilience pathways. These pathways range from static (i.e., no strategy) to innovative change. Our findings highlight that digital technology solutions may play a role in supporting resilience across the different pathways. Therefore, we adapt strategic public management literature to suggest propositions for future research to test the specific role that digital technologies play in supporting resilience within local administrations.

RESUMO

Sustainable development (SD) has recently emerged as a critical axis in industrial strategic management and debate. Apart from the scarcity of resources, the influence of economic difficulties on human life and society has increased the relevance of SD. However, estimating and analyzing the SD of any business are still in its infancy. Thus, the SD of the sports goods industry is assessed using a multilayer artificial perceptron neural network (MLP) technique employing eight distinct characteristics connected to production efficiency, international and internal environment, export, and domestic development by using Statistica software. To discover an ideal model for SD in the sports goods business, stepwise models with varied input parameters were built. The identity activation function was used to create and train an error propagation algorithm-based network. The results of various eight network models revealed that, among other models, the accuracy of our fifth model, which incorporates production efficiency, international and internal environment, strategic management, and domestic distribution organization, gives the best answer. This model has the lowest root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 0.002 and the greatest R square = 0.922, demonstrating its efficacy and effectiveness in terms of SD. Based on these findings, it is possible to conclude that using artificial neural networks is beneficial in determining an optimal solution for SD and other similar problems since this tool is important and would be utilized for forecasting and decision-making in any business.

RESUMO

The objective of this research was to understand key levers that enabled city, regional, and national governments to improve non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure during the lockdowns necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The research focused primarily on cycling and adopted a case study approach focusing on three cities: Bengaluru (India), Bogota (Colombia), and London (UK). The selected cities were chosen for diversity across geographies, country income levels, and the scale of interventions. Eight key levers were identified to understand how cycling interventions can be supported, implemented, sustained, and scaled up. These included institutional and organizational arrangements; technical capacity; financing; leadership; policy and regulatory framework; plans, strategies, and technical resources; role of civil society; and communications, messaging, and outreach. The research used secondary literature reviews and key informant interviews, which were validated through an online round table. Research revealed that certain levers were necessary in initiating and continuing successful NMT interventions. These included supportive leadership, participative civil society, and adequate financial and technical capacity. Communications and outreach helped bring behavioral change amongst residents while a coordinated institutional framework and plans and strategies were necessary to sustain momentum. This research contributes to urban mobility and public administration literature in understanding processes and enablers of sustainable mobility interventions. It is relevant for cities in low- and middle-income countries beginning to focus on NMT interventions to combat climate change and public health challenges.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study is to employ the four perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) for the analysis of cyberfraud in the South African Banking industry. In addition, this study develops a BSC strategic management control framework for mitigating the effect of cyberfraud in the South African Banking industry. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative approach involving the use of a structured questionnaire for data collection was used. The structured questionnaire made available to the staff of 17 licensed banks in South Africa in charge of management, administration and operations sections. Then the four perspectives of BSC i.e., the financial, internal business processes, customer as well as learning and growth perspectives were captured. The analysis of the responses obtained from primary data was carried out using a bar chart, and this led to the development of a BSC strategic management control framework for mitigating the effects of cyberfraud. The findings from this study show that the customer perspective, has 90.47% percent response from the indicators followed by learning and growth which relates to the employees (85.71%). The internal business processes are ranked in the third position with 57.26% while the financial perspective has the least with a percent response of 39.97%. This implies that the South African banking sector pays more attention to the non-financial than the financial measures. The implementation of the proposed BSC framework may help to promote cyberfraud reduction, improve management control systems, performance measurements, as well as customers' and shareholders' satisfaction.

Introduction: Business management throughout history has been concerned with achieving objectives and goals, through the use of strategies in order to try to guarantee the revenues that allow it to continue operating over time. The interest in achieving business efficiency has been key for modern researchers to have made important contributions to the epistemology of administrative sciences. The question then arises in the minds of administrators: Is it important to apply key performance indicators in the strategic management of health companies? Key performance indicators, or KPIs for its acronym in English, are part of the set of metrics that modern management uses to know if the business is achieving the objectives and goals set by senior management. Kaplan and Norton's Balanced Scorecard, since its appearance in 1992, has also been of great value for strategic business management. Objective: To present the importance of the use of key performance indicators when applied in the strategic management of health companies Methodology: Based on the qualitative-descriptive and hermeneutical paradigm in the which was based on studies between 2017 and 2021 supported by the Google Scholar and SciELO platforms. The inclusion criteria were articles and texts that addressed the topics of: key performance indicators, business intelligence, strategic management and balanced scorecard. Results and Conclusions: The continuous monitoring of the competitive environment in which the company is immersed, allows the adaptation of the metrics according to changes in the environment. To the extent that the metrics allow the company to become liquid, that is, make it easier to adapt to changes in the economic environment, effective and timely business decision-making will be facilitated.

RESUMO

Frequency, intensity and duration heat-related events have profound implications for future food supply through effects on plant growth and development. This concern needs effective and urgent mitigation tools. However, the effectiveness of potential solutions may decrease according to the specific cultivar response rather consider at specie level. The metyl-jasmonates are essential cellular regulators which are involved in pivotal plant development processes and related to confer protection to heat shock. Thus, our aim was to study the response of three pepper cultivars, Agio (Hungarian type), Basque (Chilli type), and Loreto (Lamuyo type), subjected to heat shock (40°C/72 h) and foliarly-sprayed with methyl-jasmonate (MeJA; 100 µmol), and the effects on several physiological traits. Our results show that despite the important differential impact of heat shock caused on each cultivar, MeJA application did not affect gas exchange, chlorophyll A concentration or efficiency of the photosystem in these cultivars. However, P concentration was reduced when MeJA was applied to Basque chilli, and a significant effect on leaf carbohydrates concentration was observed for Agio and Loreto. Moreover, Agio was the only cultivar in which the amino-acid profile was affected by MeJA under heat shock. Under that condition, putrescine increased for all cultivars, whist the effect of MeJA was only observed for spermine and histamine for Agio and Loreto. Thus, the results indicated that the ameliorative impact of MeJA on this stressor was clearly influenced by cultivar, revealing specific traits. Thus, these results could be used as valuable tools for the characterization of this intraspecific tolerance to heat shock during the vegetative growth stage of pepper.

RESUMO

Unprecedentedly impacted by COVID-19, tourism enterprises are pushed to adopt new strategic management to cope with the changes in tourists' consumer perception for sustainable development, such as corporate and compete simultaneously with their competitors. Our study aims to investigate the intermediate role of coopetition, including the three dimensions of resource similarity, market commonality, and willingness to cooperate in the marketing and performance relationships. Primary data on 360 observers were collected via questionnaire distribution to theme park managers in China with 85.3% accuracy in response rate. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to verify the intermediate effect of coopetition on marketing performance in tourism enterprises. The results of SEM indicate (1) the intermediate role of tourism coopetition, including the three dimensions existing in the relationship between tourism marketing and performance, (2) more significant positive impact on non-financial performance than that on financial performance, and (3) the mechanism of implementing coopetition. This study gives supportive evidence for tourism enterprises to implement coopetition and highlights the implications for appropriately developing coopetition strategies and tactics to achieve the synergy effect for the individual enterprises and the spillover effect for the destination regarding policy-making, mindset, and partner selection.

RESUMO

Strategic management is becoming increasingly important for sustainable management in healthcare. The reasons for this can be seen in the increasing complexity, dynamics and uncertainty of the system's regimes and the resulting need for strategic thinking in a long-term period. The scientific discussion of this issue is the aim of the present analytical framework. The starting point is the definition of the term strategic management itself, followed by a reflection on the requirements resulting from the changes in the political, social and economic value systems of our post-industrial society. In this context, Dynaxity Zone III is used to explain the long-term perspective, the high levels of complexity and uncertainty and the responsibility of strategic management as important parameters. For a practical illustration, we demonstrate two selected applications (German hospital financing systems and development process of implants) and how the implementation of strategic management in the health care system shows success.

RESUMO

University-industry collaborative research and development (UIC R&D) is generally seen as a driver of the pharmaceutical innovation process. Here, we perform a bibliometric review of UIC R&D practices over the past 30 years (1991-2020) by analyzing 800+ publications. At the strategic level of organizational cooperation patterns, the analysis shows that pharmaceutical UIC R&D mainly aims at strategic alliance formation, which gears toward universities and companies collaboratively exploring and commercializing technological breakthroughs. At the structural level of universities and companies investing in cooperation and aligning their activities, analytical results indicate that universities and companies organize themselves as interdependent entities in an open innovation ecosystem. At the cultural level of generally accepted collaboration norms and habits, analytical results show that university-company partnerships are becoming a rule rather than an exception. This study delves into a 30-year history of UIC R&D practices that support the pharmaceutical innovation process. It provides academics and practitioners with an insight into possible strategies for UIC R&D in the future and presents avenues for science, business and innovation research.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: A balanced scorecard (BSC) is an applied tool for implementing strategic management in various organizations. Implementing strategic management using the BSC approach has not received much attention in pharmacy departments. This study aims to provide a model for the strategic management of pharmacy departments using the BSC framework. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This experimental study was conducted from 2015 to 2018 in a 300-bed hospital and regional healthcare centers affiliated with the Petroleum Industry Health Organization in Tehran province, Iran. After carefully reviewing the organization's mission and vision, the strategic objectives were determined via the internal matrix and the external matrix (IE matrix), and the strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats matrix (SWOT matrix) were examined. Then, six BSC measures and interventions were identified, and each was examined from the perspectives of finance, patient satisfaction, internal processes and learning/growth. Finally, the proposed strategy was evaluated. FINDINGS: Results showed significant increases in patient satisfaction and gross profit. The observed increase range, from 0.09 to 0.29, indicates more effective operational management for optimal resource utilization. In addition, the pharmacy department was able to save US $539,137 by implementing prepared protocols for expensive medications. Similarly, the pharmacy department saved $442,899 during the two years of our strategic management plan by implementing the standard mechanism for returning unused medications to the pharmacy department after patients were discharged from various treatment units. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This study is among the first studies to demonstrate the simultaneous development, implementation and evaluation of the proposed strategy using the BSC in a pharmacy department in a public healthcare center. The BSC application improved the optimal use of resources and reduced costs while increasing patient satisfaction. It appears that the application of such an intervention may be as valuable to public pharmacies as it is to other private centers.

RESUMO

Emotion recognition (ER) is an important part of building an intelligent human-computer interaction system and plays an important role in human-computer interaction. Often, people express their feelings through a variety of symbols, such as words and facial expressions. A business ecosystem is an economic community based on interacting organizations and individuals. Over time, they develop their capabilities and roles together and tend to develop themselves in the direction of one or more central enterprises. This paper aims to study a multimodal ER method based on attention mechanism. It analyzes the current emotional state of consumers and the development direction of enterprises through multi-modal ER of human emotions and analysis of market trends, so as to provide the most appropriate response or plan. This paper firstly describes the related methods of multimodal ER and deep learning in detail, and briefly outlines the meaning of enterprise strategy in the business ecosystem. Then, two datasets, CMU-MOSI and CMU-MOSEI, are selected to design the scheme for multimodal ER based on self-attention mechanism. Through the comparative analysis of the accuracy of single-modal and multi-modal ER, the self-attention mechanism is applied in the experiment. The experimental results show that the average recognition accuracy of happy under multimodal ER reaches 91.5%.
